DDH and a Spica Cast

So I guess an update is appropriate for my little pirate walker. We took her to Children's Orthopedics where she had some x-rays done, and her legs looked at. They layed her on her back and put her legs in the butterfly position and pushed them toward the table. The left leg could almost touch the table, however, her right leg (the short leg) didn't quite make it and made her cry to even try. After the x-ray we were told Payton has DDH or Developmental Hip Dysplasia. Her left hip is great, but her right hip is completely dislocated and has been for who knows how long? Since birth????? I'm convinced that I have a sloppy pediatrician who never listened to my concerns at 12 and 18 months. But what can you do now?! If this had been caught then, Payton would've been able to avoid invasive surgery. But now she will be getting surgery here soon to rebuild her hip, that will leave her in a spica body cast for 6 weeks. Along with another surgery in 2 years to remove the plates in her hip. So if anybody has a pediatrician they would like to recommend I would love the help. I'm afraid if I were to see mine again, It would be pretty confrontational. Anyhow this is a pretty bitter post, I apologize. I know this could be much worse. I just haven't quite come to terms with it all, and I'm sure I wont until she is in the cast and we have all gotten used to the situation. Any advice, tips, anything is appreciated. I already know awsome Riley will be sharing her expertise on the spica cast with us when Payton comes home. How lucky we are to have others who are familiar with what to do. I am completely shell shocked still. If interested you can learn more at www.orthoinfo.aaos.org. Just type DDH in the search.

  1. Um, I would have to second your "sloppy pediatrician" assessment. My pediatrician does the butterfly-legs push thingy (how's that for a technical name?) at every check-up for goodness knows how long (Eli was just in for his one-year appt. and she did it then, still). I'll email you my pediatrician's name. I'm happy with her.

I'm so sorry you guys are going to have to go through this. Eli had to have a minor surgery when he was six months old (skin adhesions), and I know what a wreck I was over it. I'll be praying for her (and you!)

  2. Wow. I had no idea that it could have been prevented. That stinks. I'm sorry that you didn't know about it sooner - but I'm happy that you've at least learned about it now! Best of luck! It sounds like we need to plan another girl's night, eh? :o)

  3. Oh no. I'm so sorry you're going through this. How frustrating that your pediatrician didn't listen to your concerns, it sounds like this could have been prevented. :( I'll definitely keep you and little Payton in our prayers. I hope you get the information you need, and a pediatrician you're happy with. Hugs!

  5. We are keeping payton in our prayers! also, i am definitely NOT for suing people over trivial stuff, but this is malpractice since it could have been avoided. Isaac and think you should seriously consider filing a law suit. We hope everything goes great with the surgery!!

  6. Hi Payton, Ash and Mike. It's just about time to see how all this turns out. I hear Payton has been a real trouper. Give her a big hug and kiss from her great-grandmother Pat.

  7. Sorry this is such a WAY late comment (I'm behind on blogging), but my peditrician ROCKS! He's Dr. Thomas right by USbank and the Saturn dealership off of Old Troy. It's Primed Ped's and I've been with him since Cora was born (aside from the time we were in Denver of course), but he's awesome. Good luck with everything and I hope your little one is doing well now. What a scary thing for you guys.
